///'Afro Flys' & the new pin ups///

A recurring symbol in Leslyn's paintings is a particular style of vintage afro comb, which came from fun childhood memories of her brother taking great pleasure in attacking her with one. Her fascination with this comb was rekindled when she found one while in one of the numerous afro hair product stores in Deptford market. 



The use of the comb in her paintings (aka 'afro fly') now symbolizes the various life forces someone faces that can work with or against you; even if it is something that you feel is inherently part of you. Battling against these forces can often define who you become after the 'war' has been fought. It is only then that you are offered the chance to recognise the reason why you were 'fighting' in the first place.



The female form is also a key feature in Leslyn's work. Her women, with their fully formed voluptuous figures, have a bold presence. In their appearance of physical strength, there is beauty. In their beauty, there is underlying fragility. The representation of these women has slowly evolved into a remixed version of a pin up girl - 'Afro Fly Girls' - but there main concern is no longer to keep the troops amused!!!
